WHO MADE IT?, PART 4 – RANDOM CAUSE AND EFFECT

“Who Made It?”, words and music by Paul Hayden

PSALM 139.14: I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, And my soul knows it very well. (NASB)

Can the order we see in the universe, both in the expanse of the heavens and at the smallest levels, have been arrived at by random cause and effect? Spoken in its most fundamental terms, like the randomness of flipping coins.

About twenty years ago the State of Texas Board of Education had a controversy over the biology text books that would be approved for High School studies. One group advocated for the inclusion of Intelligent Design to be presented as a viable theory. The traditional group only wanted Darwinian evolution taught. I recall seeing on television a high school biology teacher demanding that only random cause and effect be taught in High School. There could be no Intelligent Design. Because this would mean there is a Designer.

Let’s consider random cause and effect working to bring about order from the chaos of the universe. We’re back to flipping coins. During a hospital stay I learned that we all have about one hundred valves in the veins of our arms and legs. They are check valves, only allowing blood to flow in one direction. They all face in the same direction, allowing blood to flow back to the lungs and heart. If some of the valves faced in the opposite direction, blood would get blocked and trapped between the valves.

If random cause and effect determined the direction the valves face, it would be based upon the same randomness as flipping a coin. So it would be like flipping a coin 100 times and getting heads every time. The probability model for this outcome says that this is in reality impossible. And another element of this design in the veins is the presence of the valves in the first place. They prevent gravity from causing blood to flow away from the lungs and heart. This is a logical and rational arrangement.

The song “Such Wonder” is a song I wrote about these valves in our veins. I introduced it in post on July 31, 2018, and I have attached it below.
