Genesis 1.1-4:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (2) The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
(3) And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (4) And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. (ESV)
I would like to focus on two truths from the verses above. One, the universe had a beginning. There is a theory referred to as the Steady State Theory that asserts the universe is eternal, having always existed, thus having no beginning or end. But with the advance of technology, the scientific community has come to affirm that in fact the universe did have a point of beginning. This prevailing theory is referred to as the Big Bang Theory. It has been concluded, therefore, that in a sudden moment, when there was no existing matter of any sort, the universe came into being.
Secondly, verse three above teaches us that the way God created the universe was by his spoken word. God did not have to work and fashion the elements of the universe with his hands. He did not have to engage in labor of any sort. And on each day of creation, regardless of the theories about when the universe came into being, God did it by the ease of his spoken word. And this power of God’s spoken word demonstrates God’s sovereign power over the universe. And the power of God’s spoken word is present throughout all of the Bible.
