THE RACE, PART 3B, JESUS THE PERFECTER

“The Race”, words and music by Paul Hayden

Hebrews 12.1-2:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (2)looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (ESV)

The word in verse two translated “perfecter” has built within it the idea of the person who brings about the completion and fulfillment of our faith. Jesus is the one who gives to us the faith to believe, and He also is the one who perfected God’s plan of salvation and brought it all to conclusion, by satisfying all of the requirements of God’s plan. Jesus is the only way of salvation and eternal life. The Bible says in Acts 4.12: “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (ESV)

Accordingly, there are no good works that we can do as part of the process to be saved, or to attain salvation. There is no mention in the Bible of the requirement of good works to be saved, or to preserve salvation. Jesus as the perfecter of our faith is also the one who makes us righteous in the eyes of God. Our unrighteousness and sin was exchanged for the righteousness and perfect life of Jesus. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5.21: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (NIV)
