JOHN 1.1:In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (ESV)
I’ve heard it said that the New Testament is Hebrew thought expressed in the Greek language. The New Testament is God’s thought, and John does connect and relate the Hebrew Old Testament to the New Testament.
The creation account of Genesis chapter one expresses God’s creative action in terms of Him speaking the universe into being. This chapter records for every day of God’s creation, “And God said”, followed by the discourse describing what God created on that particular day.
So, as the Book of Genesis tells us, God spoke the universe into being, starting with nothing. I’ve been taught that John chapter one bridges the Hebrew Old Testament to the New Testament by describing Christ as the “the Word”. (see Rev. 19.13)
In the language of the New Testament the words, “to speak” and “word” are from the same root word family. The verb form “lego” is connected in meaning to the noun “logos”. It is a word family loaded with meaning. “logic”. “rational thought”. “proper accounting”, all springing forth from the basic idea of “gathering together”.
And so John is setting forth the Gospel to the Greek and western world by the identification of Jesus Christ as ultimate logic and right thinking, and relating this idea to the Hebrew world that trusted in God’s power to speak, and bring things to pass.
