Galatians 3.5-6:
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith — (6) just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? (ESV)
In verse 6 above the Apostle Paul is quoting the verse of Genesis 15.6. At this point in Abram’s relationship with God, Abram had left his home country, his father’s house and his relatives to go to the land of Canaan. Abram’s actions were based upon his trust in the direction and promise of God to make him a great nation.
After an inadvisable sojourn in Egypt and a separation from his brother’s son Lot, God appeared to Abram again, whom God would give the new name of Abraham in Genesis 17.5, and promised Abraham to make him into a great nation. It was a promise that could only be fulfilled by God’s miraculous power, because of Abraham and Sarah’s old age. Abraham had the freedom of choice regarding this promise. Believe it or reject it. He believed the promise. Everyone has the freedom to believe or reject God. And a person’s actions will ultimately follow whatever it is he or she decides.
