Luke 23.42-43:
And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,” (43) And he said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (ESV)
The Gospels of Matthew and Mark tell us that the two criminals crucified with Jesus reviled him when they were all on their crosses. But Luke gives us some detail of the conversation among them. And in the late hours of the crucifixion, one of the two criminals stopped reviling Jesus.
One criminal continued to rail at Jesus and asked him if he were not the Christ. The way this criminal asked the question indicated that he expected a yes answer from Jesus that he was in fact the Christ. Instead of trusting in Jesus as the Christ for salvation, this criminal made a demand of Jesus to save them all from the peril of the crucifixion.
The other criminal rebuked the first criminal and expressed that they were getting what they deserved, but Jesus had done nothing wrong. This indicated a foundation from which believing in Jesus as the Christ for salvation and eternal life could begin.
