JOHN 8.31-32: So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, (32) and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (ESV)
The second part of verse 32, “the truth will set you free”, is quoted often. I’ve heard it used as a punch line on TV programs, and used sincerely as a generalized principal. But Jesus spoke these words to people who had just believed in Him as God’s Son.
And these verses provide assurance and confidence to us as His disciples that by following Him and staying close to Him, we can know and understand the truth regarding the difference between righteousness and sin. And we can experience freedom from the slavery of sin, which freedom comes by faith in Jesus.
