THIS UPPER ROOM, PART 11C – JESUS, THE ONLY WAY

“This Upper Room”, words and music by Paul Hayden

JOHN 14.4-6: And you know the way to where I am going.” (5) Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” (6) Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (ESV)

In verse six Jesus uses language which allows for no compromise or concession to anyone who would propose a way of reconciliation to God the Father other than Jesus Himself. All of the religions of the world set forth doctrines, beliefs, and actions that affirm salvation in their own respective ways. The words of Jesus above do not allow for any other ideas and plans for a right relationship with God separate and apart from Him.

When Jesus speaks of way, truth, life, He does use the definite article, so He is exclusively “the” way, truth and life. This is in keeping with His final thought of the verse, “no one comes to the Father except through me.” The word “through” brings to mind the idea of passing through a gate or door, both of which carry the idea of a well defined boundary.

Various ideas have been proposed to try to soften the exclusivity of Jesus’ statement in verse six. I’ve heard it said, “there is only one God, so all roads lead to Him”. Or, “you can call him Jesus, Jehovah, Allah, Buddha, or any other name. No matter what you call him, there is only one, so he has to be the same”. Or this one I remember from about twenty five years ago, “the seeds of the Gospel unto salvation are in all of the world’s major religions”.

These ideas are made up solely from the mind and thinking of humans, and they are false. They are in no way stated or affirmed in the Bible. They have no agreement or consonance with the teaching of Jesus. Rather, it is exactly as the Apostle Peter said in Acts 4.12 speaking of Jesus, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (ESV)
