JESUS REJECTED IN HIS HOMETOWN – PART 4

Mark 6.5-6: And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. (6) And he marveled because of their unbelief. (ESV)

So the big losers in this interchange with Jesus were the majority of these hometown people. They could not see or believe beyond their own self-conceived notions of how things must be and what things Jesus might be capable of doing. They made their assessment of Jesus in what looks to be a group-think decision, and they were wrong. They sized up Jesus according to their standards and found him not to be believed.

It appears to me that built into their unbelief is their own personal pride. To have faith in Jesus as the Messiah would require them to acknowledge that he transcended them. Not only in his accomplishments, but also in his very being. Through their natural eyes they were unwilling to do this. Except for the few who were healed of their sicknesses. These people had the faith to be healed.

Verse five says that Jesus “could do no mighty work there”. This inability of Jesus to do a mighty work was founded upon their unbelief. Jesus did not and would not force himself upon them. Not even for results that would have benefited them. And so we can conclude that in order for our relationship to be right with Jesus, we must come to him and have faith in him. He won’t force the issue. But he does invite us to come. Jesus says in Matthew 11.28: “Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (ESV)
