THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS – PART 5

Luke 4.9-11: And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, (10) for it is written, ‘He will give His angels charge concerning You to guard You,’ (11) and, ‘On their hands they will bear You up, Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.'” (NASB)

In the first two temptations, the devil appealed to Jesus to use His power to provide food for Himself in a self-centered and pragmatic way. And the devil offered all of the kingdoms of the world to Jesus if He would worship him. These were temptations seeking to get Jesus to respond based upon wrong motives and selfishness. In the third temptation the devil misapplied verses of scripture written directly about Jesus to make his appeal.

In the third temptation set forth in the verses above, the devil quoted to Jesus from Psalm 91, which is a prophetic psalm written specifically about Jesus. The devil quoted a portion of verse 11 and all of verse 12 out of the Septuagint translation of the Old Testament. This psalm is Psalm 90 in the Septuagint. This is the official Greek language translation of the Old Testament at that time. In the Greek New Testament it can be seen that the devil quoted it word for word. Psalm 91 is absolutely true and this being the case, the devil attempted to use this truth as the foundation of the enticement for Jesus to do wrong.

All it would have taken for the devil to have achieved his goal is persuade Jesus to misapply truth by engaging in provocative and improper actions. And furthermore, it would have been completely unnecessary for Jesus to do such a thing. And it would have been a bad example for others.
