Luke 4.8: And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your GOD and serve HIM only.'” (NASB)
In the second temptation the devil offers to Jesus, it is clear that the devil seeks to be worshipped himself. His enticement to do this is a lie, and it is for the purpose of destruction. This temptation of Jesus demonstrates the seemingly attractiveness of the outcome of the devil’s promise, but the offer leads to death. Jesus said in John 8.44, speaking of the devil, “he was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” (ESV).
The devil is a false god and he is striving against the one true God, who is the God of the Bible. God refers to Himself by the name of the LORD. His name is set forth in all capitals with an extra large “L” in English translations of the Old Testament to indicate the name God used for Himself when He appeared to Moses in the third chapter of the book of Exodus. His name means, “I AM”. So the LORD GOD is, and He will be.
Jesus matter of factly rejected the devil’s offer and put the devil in his place. Jesus quoted to the devil a portion of Deuteronomy 6.13, which is from a textual passage that begins in verse 4, affirming that everyone is to love and worship the LORD God, who is One.
The LORD God of the Bible is the only true God, and Jesus Christ is His one and only Son.
