JOHN THE BAPTIST BEGINS HIS MINISTRY

Luke 3.2-3: during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. (3) And he went into all the region around the Jordon, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (ESV)

The expression, “the word of God came” is used frequently in the Bible to indicate times when God reveals his plan, message, and will to a specific prophet so that it can be communicated to others. A close relationship with God is required of the prophet for him or her to hear the message. When John the Baptist was dedicated by his father Zechariah as a little baby, Zechariah stated in Luke 1.76 regarding John, “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,” (ESV).

One part of God’s word for the people of Israel that God wanted John to communicate is the message of repentance. The word “repentance” literally means, “change of mind”. In this context it means that God wanted the people to change their minds about what they think of sin. The people were enjoying and embracing sin. The message God wanted John to communicate is for the people to turn away from their sin. To no longer hold on to it. To change their mind about sin and reject it.

The time for the public ministry of Jesus to begin has just about arrived. Now getting the people ready for the revelation of Jesus as the Messiah becomes urgent. They must be prepared. And the first essential emphasis for their preparation is repentance and turning away from sin.
