John 4.16-18:
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” (17) The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; (18) for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” (ESV)
In verse 15 just preceding the above verses, the woman of Samaria persists in her thinking that this conversation with Jesus is all about physical water. But Jesus raises the conversation to a new level by asking her to call her husband. The woman attempted to keep the truth away from Jesus by saying that she had no husband, but he already had made his plans for resolving this conversation for a redemptive purpose.
In verses 17 and 18 Jesus responded without accusation, but rather stated the facts. I believe that Jesus was not reproving the woman of Samaria for her five husbands and living with a man who is not her husband. I do believe Jesus was speaking the facts and details of her life for the purpose of demonstrating his divine, prophetic, Messianic knowledge of her life. When Jesus says, “You are right in saying ‘I have no husband'”, he appears to be making the distinction and contrast of no singular husband that she asserted, as opposed to the plural of five husbands and a man who is not her husband that was reality. Jesus speaking these details convinced her that he is a prophet.
