Galatians 3.5-6:
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith — (6) just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? (ESV)
The course of life as a Christian is like that of Abraham written above. It is about faith and trust in God. The manner of salvation is by faith and the way of life lived thereafter is by faith. Abraham looked forward to the day of Christ. Jesus said in John 8.56: “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” (ESV)
Faith will produce obedience in the manner Abraham was obedient, and it is not obligatory obedience seeking to attain salvation or to preserve salvation. Rather, it is obedience willfully and freely engaged in because a believer wants to be pleasing to God. And this desire to please God is because the believer has a new nature within produced by the Holy Spirit, who lives in every Christian. Obedience working in an effort to get oneself saved or perpetuate salvation never accomplishes the desired result. Galatians 2.21 says, “for if righteousness were through the law then Christ died for no purpose.” (ESV)
