Matthew 5.14-16:
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (15) Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. (16) In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (ESV)
In addition to the idea that we are the light of the world when we live our lives in accordance with Jesus’ teaching, there is another facet of this light that is implied in verse 15 above. This gives us a more practical understanding of how it is possible for our lives to radiate and shine forth Jesus as the light of the world. It is simply this. As Jesus used the illustration of the lamp in verse 15, so we are a lamp where the light is placed. Therefore, Jesus is the light of the world and we are a lamp where Jesus lives.
The extent to which Jesus as the light of the world shines forth through us does in fact depend upon how we conduct ourselves. From the inside out. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6.19-20 that the physical body of a Christian is a temple of the Holy Spirit. In other words, Jesus actually lives in the body of a Christian by the presence of the Holy Spirit. In this way Jesus as the light of the world shines forth from our life and conduct.
To be a lamp who reflects the light of Jesus requires that a person actually be a believer in Jesus as the Son of God, the Savior of the world.
If you have not accepted Jesus as your savior, you may do so right now. Please go the page on this website entitled “How to Become a Christian”, and you may pray the suggested prayer set forth therein and give your heart and life to Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
